A wellness mindset, applied to the corporate environment
A previous client of mine returned to me as she was planning to open her own wellness and professional coaching business. I was more than excited to help her in this next step of her career and felt very personally aligned to her vision for the brand.
Her vision for her new company’s logo was something that closely resembled the Buddhist “Unalome” symbol – an abstract form representing growth, deepening stages of awareness, and ultimately the journey towards enlightenment.
Initial concepts and sketches
Despite having a pretty clear direction for this logo, I definitely found it challenging to strike the right balance between originality and similarity to the unalome form. I didn’t want to play too close to the original, because the brand wouldn’t feel unique and ownable. At the same time, there was a compelling narrative from the owner around the unalome and I wanted to make sure that connection was overt.
I produced many sketches – some more traditional in nature, others a bit more abstract. As corny as it might sound, as I moved through the sketching process I started to really feel in touch with the theme the owner was after. After a few rounds of presentation and discussion with the company, it seemed we wanted to head more in the direction of abstract and incorporating a circular visual theme.
Conclusion
After many rounds of tweaks, flow, and perfecting the form – we finally landed on an elegant, modern, and fully realized version of the logo the founder was chasing. It landed squarely in the middle between the original unalome concept and something more modern and brand-able, having its own unique identity.
I personally love the final solution we landed on. It feels edgy, yet approachable with a solid story behind the visual, at the same time being apparent enough to need no explanation. This is a brand I would feel proud to share and use to represent my own work, which is part of the reason I think it was so successful.
